Recruited from the Geelong Falcons with pick 52 in the 2000 National Draft, Amon Buchanan established himself at Sydney as a tenacious small forward and midfielder. Renowned for his relentless tackling pressure and ability to win contested ball despite his smaller stature, he epitomised the gritty "Bloods" culture cultivated under coach Paul Roos. Buchanan cemented his place in Swans folklore during the 2005 Grand Final, where he snapped the crucial goal that reclaimed the lead from West Coast in the dying minutes, ultimately helping to break the club's 72-year premiership drought.

After 116 games in the Harbour City, Buchanan was traded to the Brisbane Lions at the end of the 2009 season as Sydney looked to regenerate its playing list. He spent three seasons at the Gabba, tasked with adding premiership experience and hardness to a developing squad under Michael Voss. While his time in Queensland allowed him to extend his career, he remained best known for his decade of service at Sydney. Buchanan retired at the conclusion of the 2012 season, finishing his career as a highly respected competitor who maximised every ounce of his ability.
