Bio
A talented medium forward whose career was defined by a brilliant debut season and subsequent injury battles, Andrew Donnelly arrived at West Coast as a mature-age recruit after an earlier stint on the Sydney Swans' list yielded no senior games. Following a dominant period in the WAFL with Subiaco, he was selected by the Eagles in the 1996 pre-season draft and made an immediate impact, famously winning the club's Best First Year Player award ahead of future legend Ben Cousins. Donnelly was a clever half-forward with strong hands overhead and a sharp eye for goal, booting 28 majors in his first season and playing a key role in the club's finals campaign. However, his body rarely allowed him to maintain that momentum, as chronic knee and soft-tissue injuries limited his availability over the following years. Despite a serviceable return to form in 2000, he was unable to consistently break back into the senior side and retired at the end of 2001, remembered as a highly skilled forward who could have been a 200-game player with better luck.
