Bio
Originally selected by Carlton with pick 20 in the 1992 National Draft, Andrew Leoncelli failed to break into the senior lineup at Princes Park and was delisted without playing a game. After regenerating his form and confidence during a premiership season in the VAFA with Old Xaverians, he was offered a second chance by Melbourne, who recruited him with the tenth selection in the 1995 National Draft. This proved to be an inspired recruitment choice, as Leoncelli quickly established himself as a vital component of the Demons' midfield, renowned for his elite aerobic capacity, courage, and ability to win the hard ball in traffic.
Leoncelli's career peaked at the turn of the millennium, playing an instrumental role in Melbourne's run to the 2000 Grand Final. His relentless running and consistency were rewarded that season with All-Australian selection and representation for Australia in the International Rules series. Despite remaining a key contributor in the engine room, he surprised many by retiring at the end of the 2003 season aged just 29 to pursue business interests, departing the game as a highly respected figure who maximised his second opportunity at the elite level.
