Bio
Recruited from Glenelg with pick seven in the 2002 National Draft, Andrew Mackie arrived at Geelong as a slight teenager who took time to develop physically before cementing his place in the senior side. While he showed utility value as a forward early in his career, he ultimately flourished as a creative half-back flanker. Mackie became renowned for his elite kicking skills, ability to read the play for intercept marks, and his capacity to launch counter-attacks from deep in defence. He was also known for a competitive streak and an ability to get under the skin of opposition forwards, balancing a niggling defensive style with the composure to execute precise disposal under pressure.
A vital member of the Cats' golden era, Mackie played a crucial role in the premiership triumphs of 2007, 2009, and 2011, forming part of one of the most formidable defensive units in modern football history. His individual excellence and consistency were formally recognised with All-Australian selection in 2013. He remained a mainstay of the Geelong lineup until his retirement at the end of the 2017 season, departing the game alongside fellow defensive stalwart Tom Lonergan as a 280-game player and a Life Member of the club.
