Bio
Selected with the first overall pick in the 2016 National Draft, Andrew McGrath arrived at Essendon with high expectations following a standout junior career with the Sandringham Dragons. Born in Canada before moving to Australia as a young child, he made an immediate impact at AFL level, becoming the first Bomber since Dyson Heppell to win the Rising Star award in his debut season. Throughout his tenure at Tullamarine, McGrath's role has often fluctuated; while he possesses the agility and defensive pressure to play as an inside midfielder, he has frequently returned to the backline where his run and carry allows him to dictate play as a rebounding defender.
Now a seasoned veteran and long-term vice-captain, McGrath has established himself as a cornerstone of the Essendon lineup. While earlier parts of his career were defined by the debate over his best position and scrutiny regarding his disposal efficiency, he has matured into a reliable leader who sets the standard for professionalism at the club. Closing in on the 200-game milestone, he remains one of the first magnets on the board, tasked with driving standards as the Bombers look to find success in the finals.
