Bio
Arriving at the Western Oval as a mature-age recruit from East Fremantle, Andrew Purser had already tasted premiership success in the WAFL before testing himself in Victoria. He made a seamless transition to the VFL in 1983, immediately establishing himself as a mobile and intelligent ruckman who offered plenty of value around the ground in addition to his tap work. His durability was remarkable; Purser played 112 consecutive games, never missing a match throughout his entire five-season tenure at Footscray, a rare feat for a ruckman in a physically demanding era.
Purser's consistency was rewarded in 1984 when he won the Charles Sutton Medal as the club's best and fairest, serving as a vital pillar in the Bulldogs' preliminary final run under Mick Malthouse. He was also a regular representative for Western Australia in State of Origin football, consistently performing against the best big men in the country. Despite having plenty of good football left in him, Purser retired from the VFL at the end of 1987 to return to Perth and focus on his career in dentistry, leaving a legacy as one of the most effective interstate recruits in the club's history.
