Family

Arriving at Punt Road as a father-son selection in the 2003 draft, Andrew Raines carried the expectations associated with his father, Tigers legend Geoff Raines. Initially making his mark as a dashing half-back flanker, Raines enjoyed a breakout 2006 season where his rebound and run saw him finish runner-up in the Jack Dyer Medal and earn selection in the All-Australian squad. However, persistent knee injuries stifled his momentum at Richmond, limiting his output in subsequent seasons and eventually leading to him seeking greater opportunities elsewhere.

Raines was traded to the Brisbane Lions ahead of the 2010 season, where he successfully reinvented himself as a disciplined run-with player. He became the Lions' primary tagger, often tasked with nullifying the opposition's most dangerous midfielder, and played consistent football at the Gabba for four years. Following his time at Brisbane, he was thrown a lifeline by the Gold Coast Suns as a mature-age rookie for the 2015 season. He added a handful of games to his final tally before retiring, remembered primarily for his adaptability in transforming from an attacking defender into a defensive specialist to prolong his AFL career.
