Bio
Andrew Thompson remains one of the modern era's most significant success stories regarding mature-age recruitment. Drafted by St Kilda with pick 62 in the 1996 National Draft after dominating for Old Melburnians in the VAFA, Thompson entered the AFL system at age 24 and made an immediate impact. He debuted in the opening round of 1997 and retained his spot through to the Saints' Grand Final appearance that year, quickly establishing himself as a midfielder with elite endurance and a relentless work rate. While he lacked the explosive pace of some contemporaries, his ability to run opponents into the ground and accumulate possessions made him an indispensable component of the St Kilda engine room.
His standing at Moorabbin grew significantly during a difficult period for the club at the turn of the century. Thompson claimed the Trevor Barker Award as the club's best and fairest in 2000, a season where he elevated his game to an elite level despite the team's struggles. His professionalism and on-field standards saw him appointed co-captain alongside Aaron Hamill following the departure of Nathan Burke, a role he held during the crucial development years of the list that included future stars like Nick Riewoldt and Lenny Hayes. By the time he retired in 2007, Thompson had transitioned from a speculative mature-age pick into a 200-game stalwart who helped bridge the gap between St Kilda's 1997 runner-up side and the perennial finalists of the late 2000s.
