Bio
A product of Sturt in the SANFL, Andrew Underwood was a solidly built utility who struggled to cement a regular spot during his two seasons at Essendon. After managing just a dozen games for the Bombers, he was cut loose and subsequently thrown a lifeline by Richmond via the preseason draft. His brief tenure at Punt Road is best remembered for a defiant performance against his former side at Windy Hill in 1991; Underwood gathered 23 disposals off half-back to help the struggling Tigers secure an upset victory, famously leaving the ground with his arms raised to the hostile crowd. Despite showing promise as a rugged ball-winner, he was not required by incoming coach Allan Jeans at the end of the season and returned to South Australia, inadvertently leaving the number 12 guernsey vacant for future club legend Matthew Richardson.
