Bio
Originally hailing from Broken Hill, Andy Bennett arrived at Hawthorn via SANFL club South Adelaide, where he had already proven his quality as a State of Origin representative for South Australia. Standing 191cm, he was a versatile key position player capable of rotating through the ruck or drifting forward to impact the scoreboard. His VFL career began promisingly with 16 games in 1980, but his tenure at Glenferrie Oval was subsequently derailed by severe and persistent injuries, restricting him to just five senior appearances over the next four seasons and costing him a place in the Hawks' 1983 premiership side. Bennett transferred to St Kilda in 1985 seeking a change of fortune, adding 14 games to his tally before departing the VFL. He ultimately found his greatest success in Tasmania, where he forged a significant legacy as the captain-coach of Sandy Bay, winning the William Leitch Medal and later coaching the Tasmanian representative team.
