Bio
Born in England and a latecomer to the code, Andy Goodwin did not play Australian rules football until he was 18, eventually finding his way to local club Wandin after a chance encounter at a wedding. Following brief stints with St Kilda's reserves and Box Hill, he finally broke into the senior ranks at Richmond as a 24-year-old, instantly impressing to win the club's Best First Year Player award in 1987. A rugged utility who largely operated as a defender, Goodwin established a reputation as a physical competitor who used his body effectively in marking contests to protect his teammates. After being delisted by the Tigers, he was thrown a lifeline by Melbourne in the 1992 Pre-Season Draft, though his two seasons at the Demons were hampered by knee injuries, culminating in a Reserves premiership shortly before his retirement.
