Born Andrew Lukimitis to Latvian parents, Andy Lukas famously shortened his surname by deed poll early in his career, sparking a long-running myth that he did so simply to assist tongue-tied commentators. A graduate of the Carlton under-19s, he established himself as a reliable back pocket and bench specialist, most notably replacing an injured Vin Waite during the Blues' famous 1972 premiership victory. Despite that high point, he struggled to cement a permanent place in the powerful Carlton lineup and crossed to Fitzroy via a mid-season clearance in 1973. He spent his final VFL years adding experienced depth to the Lions' defence before finishing his playing days with Dandenong in the VFA.
