Honours

Recruited from Warracknabeal in country Victoria, Andy Wilson arrived in Melbourne with the primary intention of playing pennant tennis before Essendon secured his signature for football. A rover with exceptional pace and the ability to kick skillfully on either foot, he quickly progressed through the ranks, winning the Reserves Best and Fairest in 1971. Wilson was known for his courage and determination at ground level, possessing the classic attributes of a dangerous small forward-midfielder who could hit the scoreboard heavily while winning his own ball.

Wilson's career peaked spectacularly in 1973 when he won the W.S. Crichton Medal as Essendon’s Best and Fairest and finished as the club’s runner-up leading goalkicker with 40 majors. His form during this period also earned him selection for Victoria. However, he struggled to maintain that level of consistency in subsequent seasons, with a pay dispute disrupting his 1975 campaign. Wilson eventually retired from VFL football at a relatively young age in 1977, moving to the United States to return to his first sporting love as a tennis coach.
