Honours

Recruited from the Northern Knights with pick 17 in the 1993 National Draft, Angelo Lekkas served a demanding apprenticeship at Hawthorn, waiting until 1996 to make his senior debut. Once he broke into the side, he established himself as a tireless running player who could operate effectively on a wing, across half-forward, or in the midfield. Known for his elite endurance and ability to hit the scoreboard, Lekkas became a vital component of the Hawks' engine room in the early 2000s. His consistency was highlighted in 2002 when, despite missing games through a foot injury, he finished runner-up in the club best and fairest and represented Australia in the International Rules series.

Lekkas' career is perhaps best defined by the courage he showed during his final season. In early 2005, following a pre-season match, he suffered a minor stroke that threatened to end his playing days immediately. Refusing to accept a premature exit, he undertook a rigorous rehabilitation program and made an emotional return to senior football in Round 14 against Geelong, where he booted three goals in a memorable performance. He retired at the end of the season to prioritise his long-term health, leaving the game with 180 caps and a reputation as one of the club's most resilient competitors.
