Teams

Recruited from Sturt with pick 14 in the 2004 National Draft, Angus Monfries developed into a crafty small forward and occasional midfielder during a substantial tenure at Essendon. He built a reputation as a goal-sneak with high football IQ, known for his ability to irritate opponents and manufacture scoring opportunities, often drawing the ire of opposition fans for his knack of winning free kicks in dangerous positions. After topping the Bombers' goalkicking in 2011, Monfries requested a trade to Port Adelaide at the end of 2012, returning to his native South Australia to provide veteran leadership to a rebuilding list under Ken Hinkley.

His impact at Alberton was immediate, leading the Power's goalkicking in his debut season and cementing his place in club folklore with a fortuitous right-angle bouncing goal in the final Showdown at Football Park. However, the latter stages of his career were heavily impacted by the Essendon supplements saga, culminating in a 12-month WADA suspension that forced him to miss the entire 2016 season. Monfries fought his way back into the senior side for one final appearance in 2017 before retiring, finishing as a durable dual-club player who consistently provided defensive pressure and goal sense in the forward half.
