Recruited from Lalor, Anthony Koutoufides evolved from a versatile utility into the prototype for the modern athletic midfielder, fundamentally changing the expectations for players of his size. With a background in hurdles, he possessed a unique blend of height and speed that allowed him to play in almost any position, famously starring in the 1995 Premiership side before producing a patch of football in 2000 that is widely regarded as one of the most dominant individual runs in league history. His ability to take strong overhead marks and then act as a rover at ground level—often palming the ball one-handed—made him a matchup nightmare for opposition coaches.

Koutoufides remained a one-club player for Carlton, navigating the Blues through a tumultuous era as captain from 2004 to 2006. Despite suffering a major knee injury during his prime, he adjusted his game to remain a formidable inside presence, winning two John Nicholls Medals and earning All-Australian selection twice. He retired in 2007 as one of the club's most decorated figures and was later inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame, recognised for his loyalty and his role in redefining the physical attributes required for elite midfielders.
