Bio
Born on the Tiwi Islands, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti took a dedicated but unconventional path to the AFL, spending three years in Essendon's VFL program to build his fitness before being selected in the rookie draft ahead of the 2016 season. Initially utilised as a rebounding defender, he soon transitioned into a high-pressure small forward renowned for his ferocious tackling and clinical finishing. His durability was remarkable during the peak of his career, breaking the club record for consecutive games played in the AFL era, while his electrifying playstyle established him as a cult figure among the Bombers' faithful.
After retiring abruptly in early 2022 due to personal reasons, McDonald-Tipungwuti reversed his decision to return for a final campaign in 2023. Although he played a reduced role on-field in his farewell season, he served as a crucial mentor for the squad's developing Indigenous players. He retired permanently at the conclusion of 2023, leaving a legacy defined by his inspiring journey from the Northern Territory to the MCG and his reputation as one of the most exciting goal-sneaks of his generation.
