Bio
Recruited from Hamilton in Collingwood’s western country zone, Anthony Russell was a natural full-forward who flashed serious potential during a short stint at Victoria Park. He announced himself with four goals on debut against Essendon in 1982 and backed it up the following season with a match-winning six-goal haul against the Swans. Despite a potent strike rate of better than two goals per game, Russell struggled to hold a permanent spot and transferred to Preston during the 1984 season, where he immediately played a key role in their VFA premiership campaign. He ultimately returned to the bush to become a bona fide legend of the Hampden Football League, retiring as the competition's all-time record holder with more than 1,000 career goals.
