Bio
A foundation player for Fitzroy who later became a defensive mainstay at St Kilda, Arch Muirhead experienced both the highs of a powerhouse club and the struggles of a cellar-dweller during the VFL's formative years. Recruited from the Fitzroy Juniors, he featured regularly in the Maroons' inaugural 1897 campaign but found it difficult to hold his place in the formidable lineup that claimed the 1898 premiership, managing just four appearances that season. After stepping away from the league in 1899, Muirhead crossed to St Kilda, where he immediately established himself as a reliable backman, missing just one match over two seasons. He is best remembered as a member of the historic St Kilda side that defeated Melbourne in Round 1, 1900, finally snapping the club’s demoralising 48-game losing streak to record their first-ever VFL victory.
