Bio
A promising forward from Brunswick whose VFL career was heavily impacted by World War II, Archie Baxter showed immediate potential at South Melbourne in 1941. He finished his debut season as the club's third-highest goalkicker, but his momentum was halted when he enlisted with the 2/4 Independent Company Commando Unit, serving in the Middle East and the Pacific. After sustaining a shrapnel wound to the shoulder, Baxter was discharged and returned to the Lake Oval, but he struggled to recapture his pre-war continuity, managing only sporadic appearances between 1944 and 1946. While his time in the VFL was brief, he later carved out a significant legacy in the VFA, crossing to Oakleigh where he became a club legend, captaining the side to dual premierships in 1950 and 1952.
