Bio
Archie Sykes was a bona fide VFA superstar who successfully bridged the gap between eras to become an inaugural VFL premiership player. Originally hailing from Geelong West, he spent three seasons with Geelong's VFA side before crossing to Essendon in 1889, establishing himself as a versatile follower and half-forward. Aside from a lone season playing for Fremantle in Western Australia in 1891, Sykes was a pillar of Essendon's 1890s dynasty, starring in the club's hat-trick of VFA premierships (1892–1894) and serving as club captain in the two years leading up to the competition's breakaway. By the time the VFL formed in 1897, he was a 30-year-old veteran past his absolute prime but remained a vital experienced head in the lineup. He played 11 games in that historic first season, helping guide Essendon to the league's first-ever flag before retiring as a champion of both the association and the league.
