Stats
Bio
Recruited from the seaside town of Queenscliff, Arnie Bench was a solid defender who managed three seasons with the Lions in the mid-1950s. Standing 185cm, he possessed the size to handle key posts but failed to register a goal during his 37-game VFL tenure, indicative of a disciplined, stay-at-home defensive mindset. After departing the Brunswick Street Oval at the end of 1955, Bench accepted a captain-coach role with Warracknabeal in the Wimmera before eventually returning to his beloved Coutas. His legacy on the Bellarine Peninsula proved far greater than his city career, as he became a central figure in Queenscliff's golden era of the 1960s and was later named in their Team of the Century.
