Bio
Born into a prominent academic dynasty as the son of long-serving Caulfield Grammar principal Walter Buntine, Arnold Buntine’s brief VFL career was a mere footnote in a life defined by leadership and public service. He appeared for St Kilda four times during the 1918 season, standing 180cm—a key position height for the era—while still a teenager. However, the allure of academia pulled him away from the Junction Oval rapidly; he retired from top-level football to pursue studies at Melbourne University and later obtained a PhD in Edinburgh. Buntine ultimately eclipsed his on-field exploits through a distinguished career as a headmaster at Hale School and Geelong College, and as a Lieutenant-Colonel in World War II, where he commanded a battalion during the siege of Tobruk.
