Bio
Arthur Cleghorn was a clever and efficient rover who holds a significant place in history as a member of Essendon's inaugural VFL team. Recruited from Richmond City, he debuted in the league's opening round and was a member of the side that claimed the first-ever VFL premiership in 1897. Cleghorn was particularly dangerous when resting forward, evidenced when he topped the club’s goalkicking in 1899 and was one of Essendon's best performers in that year's Grand Final loss to Fitzroy. After seven seasons and 61 games in the red and black, he crossed to the VFA and played in a premiership with Richmond in 1905, cementing his status as a successful player across both competitions.
