Bio
Born in New Zealand, Arthur Gilligan was a forward who carved out a unique place in early VFL history by lining up against his original club in a Grand Final. After a brief, three-game stint with Fitzroy in 1902, he crossed to Essendon where he found greater consistency, becoming a regular contributor in the attacking 50 over three seasons. His time at the top level was highlighted by the 1904 Grand Final, where he played for the Same Olds in their loss to his former side, Fitzroy. Following his VFL career, he moved west and eventually tasted premiership success in the WAFL with Perth, playing a key role in their controversial 1907 flag win.
