Bio
Arthur Hando was a formidable defensive presence for South Melbourne during the early 1920s, arriving at the Lake Oval as a seasoned mature-age recruit from VFA club Brunswick. Standing at an imposing 189cm and weighing over 90kg—mammoth proportions for the era—he immediately slotted into the backline where he used his raw size and strength to quell opposition forwards. Hando’s approach to defence was uncompromising and occasionally unconventional; he famously found himself in the umpire’s book for shaking the goalpost as Geelong star Cliff Rankin lined up for a set shot. Despite not debuting until his thirties, he remained a fixture in the side for three seasons before departing to captain-coach South Bendigo to a country premiership in 1925.
