Bio
Arthur Leach was a solicitor by trade who successfully balanced a burgeoning legal career with top-level football. After a brief, unassuming stint with Essendon in the league's inaugural 1897 season—where critics described him as "solid rather than agile"—he requested a clearance to Collingwood in 1898 to join his brother, Fred. The move proved pivotal, as Leach shed his early reputation to become one of the Magpies' most versatile and distinguished figures during the club's early golden era, eventually being joined at Victoria Park by a third brother, Ted.
A powerful follower and forward, Leach was renowned for his scrupulous fairness and immense physical strength, once described by a veteran trainer as being "as strong as a lion." He formed a legendary ruck triumvirate with rover Dick Condon and tap-specialist George Angus, utilising a system of secret signals to dominate stoppages during the back-to-back premiership campaigns of 1902 and 1903. Respected for his intelligence and "reasoned voice" during periods of internal club turmoil, he assumed the captaincy in 1906 and later served as the club's honorary solicitor for over four decades, cementing a legacy that extended far beyond his playing days.
