Bio
A gifted all-round athlete born in Bendigo, Arthur McKenzie made a unique cameo for Geelong while still a student at Geelong Grammar School. He was called up to the VFL side late in the 1898 season, playing the final four games of the year—remarkably, he sometimes backed up for the Pivotonians just a day after competing for his school. Stationed primarily in the centre or on the half-forward flanks, McKenzie relied on the blistering speed and elite endurance that saw him crowned the Grammar's champion athlete that same year. His promising sporting trajectory was cut short by a higher calling; he left Australia to serve in the Boer War and subsequently settled in South Africa, eventually joining the South African Infantry during World War I where he was killed in action at Delville Wood.
