Teams

The brother of dual-sport athlete Harry Newbound (who played for Collingwood and Carlton while also captaining the Victorian baseball team), Arthur Newbound is best remembered for his central role in one of the league's earliest major controversies rather than his on-field exploits. A capable forward who managed 13 goals in his two seasons at Fitzroy, Newbound's career was defined by the 1910 bribery scandal, where he was one of five Fitzroy players who gave evidence to a VFL inquiry regarding offers of cash inducements to "play dead" in a crucial match against South Melbourne. The league ultimately exonerated and commended Newbound for his honesty in exposing the match-fixing plot, which remained a significant talking point in football circles for years. Following the scandal, he crossed to St Kilda for a solitary senior appearance in 1911 before finishing his career in the VFA with Essendon A and Northcote.
