Stats
Bio
Recruited from local side Leopold, Arthur Rademacher established himself as a stoic and reliable defender for South Melbourne just prior to the First World War. A true specialist in the back half, he went his entire VFL career without kicking a goal, preferring to focus on nullifying opposition forwards rather than chasing personal glory. His defensive work was instrumental during the club's successful era, culminating in the 1918 Premiership where he manned a half-back flank in the famous Grand Final victory over Collingwood.
Rademacher's departure from South Melbourne was calculated and notable; he played exactly two games at the start of the 1920 season to reach the 100-game milestone before immediately requesting a clearance to the VFA. He left to become the captain-coach of Hawthorn, helping guide the club in the years before their admission to the VFL. His connection to the Hawks proved lifelong, as he remained with the club for decades in various roles, even stepping in as a caretaker coach in the VFL for a month in 1933 following the sudden death of the appointed coach.
