Teams

Recruited from VFA club Oakleigh, Arthur Roberts joined his older brother Billy at the Saints for a career defined by a harrowing on-field trauma and a resilient comeback. His debut season as a 19-year-old was brutally interrupted during a clash with Collingwood, where a severe collision ruptured his spleen and left him in a critical condition in hospital. The life-threatening injury derailed his early progress as a defender, restricting him to sporadic appearances over the next few seasons before he left the league to coach in Bendigo. Roberts returned to St Kilda after a two-year hiatus, reinventing himself as a forward in 1936 to kick the majority of his career goals before retiring, declining renewed interest from Melbourne to focus on cricket.
