Bio
Recruited from Gisborne, Arthur "Syd" Slater burst onto the VFL scene as a lively forward, booting four goals on debut for Essendon in 1935—a feat unfortunately overshadowed by teammate Ted Freyer’s club-record 12-goal haul in the same match. Despite this electric start, Slater’s time at Windy Hill was defined by his versatility rather than his goalkicking, as he successfully transitioned into a fearless defender and follower who wasn't afraid to throw his weight around. After claiming the Bombers' reserves Best and Fairest in 1938, he crossed to North Melbourne in 1940, where he provided experienced grunt during the tumultuous war years. A career policeman who eventually rose to the rank of Superintendent, Slater brought the same discipline and physical presence to the football field that served him well in the force, finishing his VFL career as a respected utility before a final stint with Brunswick in the VFA.
