Bio
Recruited from VFA club Preston as a 28-year-old mature-age rookie, Arthur "Chidda" Stevens wasted no time making his mark at the Western Oval, earning Victorian state selection in just his second season. A rugged and combative ruckman who wasn't afraid to impose himself on the contest, Stevens is perhaps best remembered for a chaotic 1929 clash against Melbourne at the MCG where he was assaulted by angry spectators—including a woman wielding a parasol—before receiving a heavy ten-week suspension for his own role in the on-field skirmishes. He served as acting captain during that tumultuous season and laid the foundation for a formidable family dynasty, with his son Harvey becoming a 1954 premiership hero for the club and his great-grandsons Daniel and Michael Talia later forging their own AFL careers.
