Bio
Arthur "Artie" Malberg was a fringe player who represented two of the VFL’s expansion clubs during their formative years in the major league. A local product who broke into the Footscray ranks in 1927, Malberg’s time at the Western Oval was characterised by near-misses; he was notably selected for the Round 3 clash against Hawthorn but was a late withdrawal due to illness, eventually making his solitary appearance for the Tricolours later that season. Seeking greater opportunity, the 20-year-old crossed to North Melbourne in 1928, hoping to cement a spot in a struggling Shinboners lineup. He managed just three senior games without impacting the scoreboard, ultimately serving as a depth player during a difficult era where both clubs fought to establish their VFL credentials.
