Arriving at the Lake Oval from Middle Park, Artie Wood quickly became a fixture in the South Melbourne lineup, etching his name into club history as the youngest member of the 1918 premiership side. Predominantly playing as a wingman, he was known for his durability and football intelligence, traits that saw him elevated to the position of playing coach in 1921 at the exceptionally young age of 23. While he served the Bloods faithfully for seven seasons, Wood eventually turned his back on the VFL to accept lucrative captain-coaching offers in the bush. He departed after 1923 and forged a formidable reputation in country football, leading both Maryborough and Horsham to premiership glory in the years that followed.
