Stats
Bio
Recruited from Lilydale in the Eastern Districts Football League, Ashley Matthews was a tall utility who arrived at Princes Park via pick 26 in the 1989 Pre-Season Draft. Standing at 190cm, he was primarily used as a key forward or third tall, capable of taking a strong contested mark and booting long goals. Despite showing flashes of potential—including a promising debut season where he featured at centre half-forward—he struggled to cement a regular spot in a formidable Carlton lineup. Seeking greater opportunity, he was involved in a trade to Fitzroy ahead of the 1992 season, but his time at the Lions was similarly sporadic, adding just six games over two years before being delisted. He subsequently returned to Lilydale, where he forged a successful local legacy as a premiership-winning captain-coach.
