Bio
One of the rare South African-born players in League history, Aubrey MacKenzie commenced his career with Melbourne in 1914 before the outbreak of the Great War halted his progress. After serving overseas, he returned to forge a formidable reputation in the VFA, anchoring Footscray’s back-to-back premiership sides in 1919 and 1920. St Kilda eventually secured his services as a mature-age recruit in 1922, hoping his ruck craft and experience would bolster their struggling list. A strong-bodied follower, MacKenzie provided immediate leadership and competitiveness at the Junction Oval, playing a vital role in lifting the Saints from the bottom of the ladder to a respectable mid-table standing during his three-season tenure.
