Bio
Recruited from the rich football territory of Colac, Austin McCrabb was a dour, old-fashioned defender who developed a cult following at Geelong during the late 1980s. Capable of punching above his weight division in the backline, his on-field career highlight came in early 1991 when he blanketed Carlton spearhead Jon Dorotich, keeping him goalless in a win at Kardinia Park. However, McCrabb’s time at the Cats is most infamously remembered for a bizarre incident at Waverley Park where coach Malcolm Blight banished him from the quarter-time huddle following a defensive error, leaving him standing alone on the ground. Delisted shortly after that public undressing, he was thrown a lifeline by Hawthorn in the 1992 Pre-Season Draft, adding nine games to his tally before finishing his playing days with a VFA premiership at Sandringham.
