Recruited from Sturt, Barnaby French entered the AFL as a mobile ruckman and forward option during Port Adelaide's rise in the late 1990s. Possessing excellent field kicking skills for a player of his size and a reliable left boot, he proved to be a serviceable utility tall at Alberton. However, his capacity to secure a permanent role as a starting ruckman was severely limited by the presence of All-Australian captain Matthew Primus, forcing French to often operate as a forward support or backup follower in a side consistently pushing for finals action.

Seeking greater opportunity to lead a midfield division, French requested a trade to Carlton at the end of 2002, a move that saw the Blues part with the 16th pick in the national draft. He arrived at Princes Park during one of the club's most difficult eras, tasked with filling the void left by Matthew Allan and shouldering a significant workload. While he provided competitive effort and acted as a senior figure for a developing list during successive wooden spoon seasons, his tenure was ultimately frustrated by persistent physical setbacks. After battling to stay on the park, French announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2006 season, ending his career as a skilled big man who was often unlucky with timing and fitness.
