Bio
Recruited from the Wangaratta Rovers in the Ovens and Murray League, Barrie Beattie was a strongly built key position prospect who arrived at the Western Oval with a reputation for safe hands and a powerful overhead mark. His pathway to League football was facilitated by a chance connection with Footscray’s Chairman of Selectors, Bill Mobbs, who arranged for the country teenager to train with the Bulldogs while working in the local meat industry. Beattie endured an inauspicious debut in 1964, fielded as the 20th man for just minutes on a muddy Glenferrie Oval, and spent the majority of his three-season tenure on the fringe of senior selection. While he showed glimpses of his potential—most notably booting two goals in a solid performance against Melbourne in 1966—he struggled to regain confidence following an accident and ultimately fell out of favour with coach Ted Whitten. After being delisted, he forged a successful career in the VFA with Yarraville and later captain-coached Parkside in the local district league.
