Bio
Recruited from Golden Point in the Ballarat Football League, Barrie Bretland was a utility player capable of filling various roles across the ground. He arrived at Kardinia Park in 1949, joining the club just as it was assembling the formidable list that would dominate the early 1950s under Reg Hickey. Despite managing 15 senior appearances across two seasons, Bretland found it difficult to lock down a permanent position in a lineup overflowing with emerging premiership talent. He was appointed captain of the Geelong reserves in 1952, but rather than continue in the seconds, he left the VFL environment before the season began to take up a coaching position with Lemnos in the Goulburn Valley. Post-football, he remained heavily involved in the sporting landscape, forging a successful long-term career as a sports journalist.
