Recruited as a prodigious teenage talent from Lucknow in the Bairnsdale District Football League, Barrie Somerville arrived at North Melbourne with a formidable reputation after booting 119 goals in the 1957 country season. Standing just 174cm and weighing a slight 63kg, the 17-year-old forward was thrust immediately into senior action, making his debut in the opening round of 1958. However, his VFL career was brief; after just three games and a solitary goal, Somerville realised that the hustle of city life did not agree with him. He ultimately turned his back on the VFL to return to East Gippsland, where he resumed his status as a local legend, topping the Bairnsdale league's goalkicking tables multiple times throughout the 1960s.
