Arriving at Moorabbin as a teenager, Barry Breen was thrust into VFL history almost immediately. While he developed into one of the league's most durable servants, his career remains inextricably linked to a single kick in the 1966 Grand Final. As an 18-year-old, his wobbling snap for a behind against Collingwood gave St Kilda the solitary point lead required to secure the club's first and only premiership, cementing his place in Saints folklore before his career had truly begun.

Beyond that defining moment, Breen proved to be a versatile and resilient competitor over 18 seasons. Standing 191cm, he possessed the mobility to play as a key forward, a ruck-rover, or a key defender. His adaptability allowed him to reinvent himself as the team's needs changed; notably, he transitioned from a goal-kicking forward to a reliable full-back later in his career. This utility value was crucial during the Saints' leaner years in the late 1970s and early 1980s, where he often held the side together through his experience and leadership, eventually serving as club captain in 1979.
