Recruited from Essendon Baptists-St John's, Barry Capuano established himself as a reliable and courageous rover during a successful era for the Bombers. He broke into the senior side in 1959 and quickly became a consistent performer in the midfield, valued for his clean ball use and ability to read the play. His on-field pinnacle came in 1962, where he played a key role in the club's premiership triumph, eventually retiring in 1966 as a Life Member with 118 games to his name.

Capuano's legacy at Windy Hill extends well beyond his playing statistics, as he later transitioned into one of the club's most influential administrators. Serving as General Manager for over a decade, he was instrumental in professionalising the club off the field during the 1980s. Most notably, Capuano was the driving force behind the appointment of Kevin Sheedy as senior coach in 1981, a decision that fundamentally altered the trajectory of the Essendon Football Club and set the foundation for decades of success.
