A prolific junior forward recruited from the Reservoir Colts, Barry Evans progressed through the Magpies' ranks to claim the club's Under-19s leading goalkicker award in 1980. The diminutive rover was just 17 years old when he was handed his senior debut in Round 7, 1981, instantly looking at home at the level with 18 disposals and two goals in a thumping win over South Melbourne. Despite showing plenty of promise as a high-production small forward, Evans retained his spot for only one more match against Essendon before returning to the lower grades. He continued to feature for the Reserves and Under-19s throughout 1982 but was unable to force his way back into the senior side, finishing his VFL career with a brief but memorable two-game cameo in the number 57 guernsey.
