Recruited from Edithvale-Aspendale, Barry "Lurch" Goodingham was a towering ruckman who became a central figure at North Melbourne during their transition from cellar dwellers to a powerhouse. Standing at 199cm, he used his imposing frame to control stoppages and provide a physical presence around the ground. His standing within the playing group was significant, evidenced by his appointment as club captain in 1971 during a testing era before the arrival of Ron Barassi. Goodingham’s perseverance was ultimately rewarded in 1975 when he was selected on the bench for North Melbourne’s inaugural premiership side, taking the field late in the final quarter to replace Mick Nolan and share in the club's historic breakthrough victory over Hawthorn.

Following the premiership success, Goodingham’s time at Arden Street came to an abrupt end due to a high-profile trade arrangement. He was moved to South Melbourne for the 1976 season as a key component of the deal that saw Peter "Crackers" Keenan head to North Melbourne. Goodingham provided experience and stability to the Swans' ruck division for two seasons, playing 30 games in the red and white, before departing the VFL to captain-coach Woodville in South Australia. He remains a revered figure at North Melbourne as a life member and a vital part of the team that broke the club's long-standing premiership drought.
