Teams

Recruited from Ararat, Barry Grinter was a towering left-footed utility who swung between the ruck and key defensive posts during a volatile era for Essendon. Standing 191cm, he developed into a consistent performer at Windy Hill, finishing runner-up in the club's 1975 Best and Fairest count, though he is often best remembered for his unique role in the infamous 1974 brawl against Richmond. A serving police officer off the field, Grinter instinctively reverted to his training during the melee, chasing down and restraining a Tigers player who had struck a trainer, effectively applying a police hold on the playing surface. He departed the VFL to captain-coach Hobart in 1977, representing Tasmania during his season away, before returning to Melbourne for a final six-game stint with the Tigers in 1978.
