Family

Recruited from Carlton Rovers, Barry Ion joined his older brother Graham at Footscray in 1961 and experienced a rapid ascent from the reserves to the league's biggest stage. A dashing half-back flanker, he was thrust into the 1961 Grand Final against Hawthorn in just his sixth senior game, lining up in defence as the Bulldogs fell short in their premiership bid. Although he established himself as a regular fixture in the backline over the subsequent two seasons, persistent injuries eventually stalled his progress at the Western Oval. He transferred to Yarraville in the VFA to better balance football with his burgeoning work as a radio caller, later moving to South Australia to play for Woodville in the SANFL. While his VFL career was brief, Ion's legacy was cemented off the field as he transitioned into a media icon, best known as one half of the legendary "Bazz and Pilko" radio duo.
