Stats
Bio
A rover and wingman recruited from Pascoe Vale, Barry Matthews progressed through the Essendon Under-19s, where he finished runner-up in the 1959 best and fairest to future club legend Jack Clarke. He broke into the senior side for his debut in Round 7, 1962, but struggled to cement a permanent spot in a powerful Bombers lineup that went on to win the premiership that season. While he managed just 12 senior appearances over three years, he remained a dominant force at the lower level, claiming the club's reserves best and fairest award during his debut season. Matthews eventually left Windy Hill in 1965 to join Kyneton, where he enjoyed a successful country career that included representative honours with the Bendigo League.
