Recruited from West Preston, Barry Padley established himself as a durable and serviceable rover and forward pocket for Fitzroy during a challenging era for the club. Arriving at the Lions in 1968, he developed a reputation for his evasiveness and goal sense, often rotating between the midfield and the forward line to support the team's primary scorers. While he played alongside club icons such as Kevin Murray and later Garry Wilson, Padley carved out his own niche as a consistent contributor who could be relied upon to gather possessions and apply pressure.

Padley remained a loyal one-club player throughout his decade-long tenure at the Junction Oval, rarely commanding the spotlight but earning the respect of the faithful for his longevity. He successfully navigated the transition into the 1970s, accumulating 159 senior appearances and earning life membership with the Lions. He retired following the 1978 season, leaving a legacy as a dedicated servant who helped hold the side together during a period where on-field success was often fleeting.
